| Summary: | Memoirs of a Jew, born in 1923 in Hamburg, who moved with his family to Antwerp before the Nazi rise to power. When Belgium was invaded, they fled to France and found temporary refuge in Montagnac (near Montpellier) in the Vichy zone. In 1942 Feldman's mother and three sisters, as well as his aunt and three of her children, were deported and killed at Auschwitz. French neighbors protected Feldman and his father. They fled to the Italian-occupied zone of France, where they were safe until the Germans took over. They survived the final year and a half of the war hiding in the Italian Alps, where they were aided by an Italian priest and the archdiocese of Genoa, among others. After the war they returned to France and then to Antwerp. |
