Abstract:The balance of absolute angular momentum in the mature hurricane is examined quantitatively. It is found that the cyclonic angular momentum which ultimately appears in the hurricane is first introduced into the atmosphere at considerable distances from the hurricane. From here it is transferred into a broad region surrounding the hurricane through the agency of "horizontal-eddy" processes. Closer to the center of the hurricane, angular momentum is transported radially inward through the agency of "vertical-eddy" processes. It is proposed that a change from the "Hadley regime" to the "Rossby regime" resulting from the greater rate of rotation of the earth about the axis of the hurricane in mid-latitudes is at least partly responsible for the observed changes in the wind structure of the hurricane as it moves poleward. It is suggested further that -he formation of a hurricane takes place in regions in which the intertropical convergence zone coincides with either an easterly wave or a shear zone. The easterly wave and the shear zone possess supplies of angular momentum which are maintained by horizontal-eddy convection, while the intertropical convergence zone provides an intense heat supply which is capable of driving vertical-eddy convection.
