| Abstract: | The psychological effects of chronic illness were examined using the Jr.-Sr. High School Personality Questionaire. The scores from a group of 20 adolescents who have Cystic Fibrosis were compared to the scores of a control group matched on age and sex. The questionnaire revealed significant differences between the two groups on several dimensions. The CF group rated as more self sufficient and displayed less ergic tension than the control group. It also registered lower on the broader second-stratum factor of extrovertism. The older CF group (16- 18) was more tough minded while the younger CF group (12-15) was more submissive and shy and timid than the corresponding control groups. It is suggested that these differences should be recognized and dealt with in order to develop a treatment regimen for a chronic illness that is effective both physically and psychologically. |
