Abstract:The goal of this project is to measure the forward scattered light from a small sphere at angles down to zero degrees. By cancelling the unscattered illumination beam with a Mach-Zehnder interferometer, it was possible to observe the scattered light plus the interference term from the scattered light interfering with the residual unscattered beam. It was found that in order to measure the scattered light alone, it will be necessary to make the residual unscattered beam 100-1000 times darker. This paper describes the experimental progess toward this goal and analyzes the effects of interferences on the light exiting the interferometer.
