| Item Description: | Printed in double columns within a decorative twisted border; illustration of the underside of a horse's hoof at top. Niall Kenny, bookseller, description: Very scarce; 2nd edition c. 1820 (copy in RCVS but not marked as 2nd). There is confusion as to whether this is the first edition or not, but suspect it is having examined the 3rd and a possible 2nd (in RCVS), as it clearly has less text than the either of these other printings. My copy is identical to copy in RVC. There is a small image of the sole of a horse’s foot at the top of the page, just above the title. This is almost certainly the same item that is mentioned on p 79 in Huth “Directions to farriers respecting cutting the frog…” No such title can be traced, except in an advert by Renshaw and Rush for veterinary titles (clearly all written by Clark) where it is called “Directions to farriers respecting cutting the frogs of horses. Price 6d.” This advert appears at the end of “Observations on the general principles and on the particular nature… of inflammation.” by J. H. James, published in 1832. A rare advert in the Wellcome collection (17911/C) of a sammelband of Clark’s works also mentions “A direction to farriers respecting the cruel practice of cutting away the horn of the frogs of horses’ feet. Price 6d. for hanging up in forges, third edition.” Thus it seems very likely that this is the title Bracy Clark gave this broadsheet.
