Description
Item Description:Detlev Auvermann, bookseller, description: 8vo, pp. viii, 199, [1, errata], with 148 wood-engraved illustrations in the text; a fine copy in contemporary marbled boards, manuscript spine label. First edition, very rare, of Graf's well illustrated and thoroughly organised work on equine anatomy. Intended as a companion and instructional manual to his lectures, Graf presents a full anatomy of the horse. Long chapters are dedicated to the teeth, their wear and changes in shape throughout life, and malformations. On this follow succinct descriptions of each part of a horse’s body, the correct position of its limbs, and the different gaits. Malformations and diseases are described throughout but, as a purely anatomical work, treatments are not discussed. The final two pages provide a list of contemporary and near contemporary literature on the subject, which Graf obviously considered of merit. The author was a professor of zootomy and physiologist at the veterinary institute, Vienna. A second edition was published at Vienna in 1851; the original was reprinted in 2017. Provenance: Freiherr G.A. von Liebenstein, inscribed in ink on front free endpaper, and with his bookplate on front paste-down.
