By focusing on a 1D particle in a box the proposed text will give students a solid understanding of the theoretical underpinnings of real-life spectroscopy and quantum mechanics. The author will use analytical calculus and group theory to walk the student through the process of applying this knowledge to complex 3D models and simulations leading to an intuitive understanding of real life chemical behavior. The reader will learn how to produce realistic spectroscopic simulations that are based on the one-dimensional particle in a box system and the one-dimensional particle on a ring system. Wave functions, energy equations, transition intensities, and spectroscopic selection rules will be derived for absorption, emission, Rayleigh, and Raman spectra using analytical calculus and group theory approaches. Numerous feature boxes in the text will illustrate how a detailed 1D understanding enables the reader to develop intuition of 3D spectroscopic behavior by analogy. The author has successfully used this approach for teaching spectroscopy and quantum mechanics at Sam Houston State University for 17 years"--
