| Summary: | The Sociology of Race/Ethnicity market is large and diverse, with many kinds of books competing for different market segments. One major insight from contemporary scholarship on race is that 'racism' is a complex phenomenon, and a wide range of theories about race and racism are studied and discussed. Traditional Race/Ethnic Relations texts only touch upon some of these theories in an opening chapter or two. Other courses might assign one or several scholarly monographs that explore one theory in depth (Color-Blind Racism, White Privilege, Racial Formation, et cetera) Understanding Racism will be the first text for the undergraduate classroom that systematically examines a number of the most important theories and theoretical perspectives about racism. The author uses the same structure and pedagogical approach across chapters, making it easier for students to evaluate and compare the different theories.
