Summary:Tess agrees to marry Angel, to his great joy. When he confesses to a dishonourable event in his own past, Tess feels that she can at last tell him about her relationship with Alec D'Urberville and its consequences. Appalled, Angel feels that he and Tess must separate, although they remain married. Alec leaves for Brazil to set up a farm there, while Tess endures a harsh winter on a farm run by Groby, the cruel bailiff.
