| Item Description: | Jonathan Hill, bookseller, description: First edition of one of the earliest general bibliographies of agriculture, which included veterinary medicine and economics. Re (1763-1817), was a leading Italian agronomist and botanist, active in introducing improved methods of agriculture. He was professor of botany and agriculture and director of the botanical garden at Modena. Known in Italy as the “prince of agronomists,” his writings on the subject were the most-read Italian texts on the subject of the first half of the 19th century. This bibliography is rather unusual in that Re provides extremely long and detailed notes for each of the ca. 500 titles listed. It is arranged by themes: ancient Greek and Roman authors; Italian, French, English, German, Swiss, and Scandinavian authors; dictionaries; journals; and ending with a most useful author index. Fine and crisp copy. Half-title lacking. Re later enlarged this work in his 1808-09 Dizionario ragionato. |
