| Item Description: | Michael Laird, bookseller, description: Orange cloth, black lettering on front cover and spine with an illustration of a farm scene on front cover. Binding tight, covers clean with light edge wear, two bumps on top edges of binding, generally very good condition, free from blemishes. Scarce Czech-American veterinary book dealing with the care of horses, cattle, and other livestock. The text is in the Czech language with some passages in English with Czech translation. Described on the cover as "Jonas-Heller," the title indicates that this is a "Gold Book" for Farmers, with information about internal and external diseases of horses, cattle, sheep, pigs, and poultry, and with the Supplement on home remedies. Our copy is preserved in remarkably fresh state, suitable for exhibition. The publication history of this work is not entirely clear. This appears to be the third (or fourth?) but in the Preface it is described (in English) as the most "up to date). All editions are scarce: this 1915 edition is held by the National Czech & Slovak Museum and Library, Southern Illinois Univ., UChicago, and UMinn. By The Racine, Wisconsin publisher "Slavia" issued several editions: 1881 (214 pp., the unique copy at UChicago); 1885 (246 pp., the unique copy at UKansas); 1894 (354 pp., copies held by UChicago, UMinn, and UOttowa). Miloslav Rechcigl ("Czech American Bibliography: A Comprehensive Listing with Focus on the U.S." p. 35), describes the 1885 edition as the 3rd, and the 1893 edition as the 4th. OCLC record 1002926720 states that the "first edition" was published in 1878 but no copies of it have been located by us. Includes index. Entry number 18 in Esther Jerabek's bibliography Czechs and Slovaks in North America. |
