Description
Item Description:Woodcut vignette on title page of horse being given a drench.
Title in red and black.
Jonathan Hill, bookseller, description: Small 8vo, attractive antique calf-backed paste-paper boards (minor browning due to the quality of the paper, several leaves with light marginal damp-staining), spine gilt, red morocco lettering piece on spine. An unrecorded book on the care of horses. By the middle of the 16th century, Master Albrecht’s highly important and influential 13th-century work on the care of horses and the treatment of their ailments had been modified, amended, enlarged, and utterly transformed by a series of anonymous contributors. Many of these writers added texts by Giordano Rosso and other authors on equine care as well as their own experiences. All of these changes resulted in a very different work from the earliest printed editions of Master Albrecht in the 15th century. This work is just such an example. Anonymously written, there is no place of publication or printer’s name given. The text is clearly a greatly enlarged version of Master Albrecht’s 36 short notices of diseases and their therapies. Many pharmaceutical recipes given. Very good copy of an extremely rare book. A version of the same woodcut vignette of the title was used in the "Ein bewaerdt Neüw Rossz artzny buch" (Basel: R. Deck, 1545) of which only one copy is known, at the University of Basel.
