The National LIbrary of Australia give the date as 1853, which is also the date of Gerstäcker's Narrative of a journey round the world ... A criticism of this story appears in "Reminiscences of an adventurous and chequered career at home and at the antipodes," by Alexander Tolmer (London: S. Low, Marston, Searle and Rivington, 1882) (viewed on Internet Archive), in which a fictionalized Tolmer appears. The Cushing Library/Dykes Collection copy has handwritten note: "'Once a month library,' issued by Henry Lea about 1865." Henry Lea was a London-based publisher of popular literature active 1850s-1870s (not the same person as Henry C. Lea, an American). |
