| Item Description: | In fraktur. Large armorial woodcut coat of arms on title page and final leaf with a full page woodcut coat of arms of Caspar von Mühlhausen (1479-1502), Bishop of Basel. Bookseller description: The only known copy of this early edition of Master Albrecht's highly important and influential work on the care of horses and the treatment of their ailments. Master Albrecht was a member of the court of Emperor Frederich II (1194-1250), who accumulated a large menagerie of exotic mammals and birds and took a speckal interest in veterinary medicine. Master Albrecht's text on equine health was very popular with a number of manuscripts and printed editions (all printed editions are extremely rare, having been used to death). The first printed edition appeared in Augsburg in 1485. The work treats 36 diseases, although not in a systematic order. The main subject is therapy, in which Albrecht shows himself to be an experienced practitioner. Written in the vernacular and largely free of lore, the work proved highly influential. It was translated into Czech several times and manuscripts survive in Italy, northwestern Germany, and Prussia. Its influence is found in every German or Czech equine medical work up to the 18th century. Albrecht's Arzneibuch der Tosse is also credited with being one of the first works in German to mention shoeing. |
