Description
Summary:Subtle racism, sexism and heterosexism remain relatively invisible and potentially harmful to the well-being, self-esteem and standard of living of many marginalized groups in society. These daily common experiences of aggression may have significantly more influence on anger, frustration and self-esteem than traditional overt forms of racism, sexism and heterosexism. Their invisible nature prevents perpetrators from realizing and confronting their own complicity in creating psychological dilemmas for minorities and their role in creating disparities in employment, health care and education. The book begins by introducing the concept of microaggressions and then presents a taxonomy of microaggressions. Next, the book looks at the psychological effect of microaggressions on both the perpetrators and target person. The manifestations of racial, gender and sexual orientation microaggressions are explored along with their impact. The book closes with a discussion of microaggressions in education, employment, and health care along with suggestions and guidelines for combating microaggressions. Each chapter concludes with a section called "The Way Forward" that contains guidelines, strategies and interventions that can be taken to make our society free of microaggressions.
