| Summary: | During the New Negro Renaissance, critics dismissed Anne Spencer's nature-filled writing as apolitical and raceless, but this study shows how she uses the natural world in innovative ways to express her Black womanhood, feminist politics, spirituality and worldview. Using ecopoetics as an analytical framework, Do Not Separate Her from Her Garden centers Spencer's archive of ephemeral writings to demonstrate her artistry, and, through analyses of works by Alice Walker, Zora Neale Hurston and Dionne Brand, the author invites further exploration of Black women's natural world writing. |
