| Summary: | 'While seeking a publisher for my memoir, the Supreme Court decided to reconsider college access. I had tried to avoid writing directly about this contentious subject but "Why Affirmative Action Remains Necessary" asks readers to imagine life without this national policy. Affirmative Action may open a door, but who can assure success? What happens after a student is admitted or a worker hired depends on the individual and other people. If the Supreme Court outlaws or further restricts Affirmative Action, countless opportunities will disappear for everyone. From 48.2 million in 2019, African Americans are expected to increase to 74.5 million by 2060. Asian Americans will likely increase to 36 million by 2060, from 18.6 million in 2021. And the Census Bureau estimates that by 2060 there will be 111.22 million U.S. Latinos, not 62.5 million as in 2021. Will these overlooked and sizable populations apply, enroll, attend, and graduate from the 5,300 colleges and universities in the U.S. without Affirmative Action? Affirmative Action has made higher education enormously visible and accessible to people of all backgrounds. Federal policies that embrace students and workers by affirming equal practices have allowed millions to transform their lives, improving families and advancing the U.S. economy. How is Affirmative Action not a great public investment for all Americans? In roughly 50,000 words, I describe the challenges of a handful of descendants of the hardy 1.5 million Mexican Revolution immigrants who crossed the border into the U.S. between 1910 and 1928.
