Description
Summary:Chronicles the life of Gandhi beginning with his political activities in South Africa during the late 1890's and ending with his assassination at the hands of a Hindu extremist in 1948. After leading a non-violent protest campaign for the rights of all South African Indians, Gandhi returns to India, where he agrees to take up the fight for India's independence from the British Empire, mounting a non-violent campaign of unprecedented scale. After Britain finally grants India's independence, religious tensions between Hindus and Muslims erupt into nationwide violence, leading Gandhi to declare a hunger strike. After Pakistan is created for the Muslims, Gandhi is opposed to the idea and tries to bring about peace between both nations. He angers many dissidents on both sides, one of whom finally gets close enough to assassinate him.
