People face severe obstacles to achieving higher levels of well-being due to persistent lags and new challenges for social justice. This volume begins with a study of the legacies of inequality in education and then explores the differentiated patterns of opportunities to acquire decent jobs and income. Added to these asymmetries are two relatively new phenomena that have deepened the existing social gaps and that represent essential research agendas: return migration and climate change. The book concludes with an analysis of citizen perceptions of inequalities and of the heterogeneity of government capacities available at the subnational level to reduce these social asymmetries.
