Description
Summary:The Molette de Morangiès family was an important noble family in the Lozère province of southern France whose members included prominent figures in military, political, and religious affairs. Jean-Alexandre, who wrote the letters in this collection, served as vicar-general for the Bishop of Auxerre; his title of " abbé commendataire d'Arles"indicates that he enjoyed that ecclesiastical benefice without religious office or monastic activity. His brother Jean-Adam, the recipient, was a member of the Knights of Malta. Although the letters date from 1756, the majority of them were written 1772-1775, during which time both brothers were involved in a legal dispute with another, better-known brother, Jean-François-Charles, over inheritance and financial mismanagement.
