520 |a The Arthurian story can be seen as an evolving constellation of characters and themes that remain recognizable as they pass through different material, literary, social and contexts. This collection provides an innovative and wide-ranging introduction to the world of Arthur by looking beyond the canonical texts and themes to encompass a global perspective on the Arthurian narrative as it has been presented in different media and different time periods. From early Welsh poetry to the twenty-first century animeÌ? series produced by the Fate franchise, the essays in this collection explore the continuities that make the material recognizable in different times and places and the astonishing variety of adaptations that have made the Arthurian story popular in large parts of the world. Divided into three main sections, Arthurian Texts and Material Contexts: 600-1600, The European World of Arthur: 1200-1800 and Crossing Genres, Crossing Centuries: 1500-2018 the book focuses on the moments of transition in which Arthurian material has moved across temporal, material and geographical boundaries. Although broadly chronological, the sections are bound together by their thematic focal points and contain different examples of textual and visual representations of Arthur that illustrate the breadth and scope of Arthurian adaptation.
