Description
Summary:Two photographs mounted on photographer's boards of the "Delta [t?s?l?]ec class of '98, H.H.S." ... "taken in the chemical laboratory". Possibly located in the Mississippi Delta region, most likely a Southern state. There are 17 students in the class, only 5 being male and two of them African-American females, with 1 male teacher. The students pictured are around high school graduation age and are outfitted in lab aprons bearing "'98" or "Delta '98." Several chemistry instruments pictured, such as vials, funnels, beakers, and a mortar and pestle. Students' names and date inscribed on verso of one of the images. Photos taken in short succession, with some students posed and focused on the camera and others looking away. A scarce example of a coeducational and multiracial classroom in the Jim Crow era.
