Description
Summary:Price list for the provisions of fresh foodstuffs and other goods for ships anchored at the colonial forts in Mexico, in particular San Juan de Ulúa in Veracruz. The monopoly on these prices had been acquired by the merchant Don Pedro de Roxas at auction on April 19, 1731 and was valid for nine years. This has been approved by means of an official stamp and the manuscript signature in ink of the chief notary of the colonial government in Mexico, Don Joseph de la Cerda Moran (escribano mayor de la Gobernación y Guerra de Nueva España). Further authorisation is given in the text by name of Juan Vazquez de Acuña y Bejarano, Viceroy for New Spain. The document lists no less than 77 different types of foodstuffs and other goods. Weight is measured in quintals and prices in pesos and reals. For example, each quintal of salted beef, free of all bones, at six pesos, and six reales; each quintal of salted fish: pargo, robàldo, or others, that are brought to this city, at eight pesos. THis pamphlet contains valuable information on daily life and the socio-economical structure in colonial Mexico.--From bookseller's description.
