James Michael McConnell and Richard John "Jack" Baker were the first legally married same-sex couple in United States history on 3 September 1971. Their marriage is also the earliest same-gender marriage ever to be recorded in the public files of any civil government. The Cushing Library/Women & Gender Studies copy was acquired as part of The Don Kelly Research Collection of Gay Literature and Culture.
