| Abstract: | ABSTRACT: The value of the T₄ test for serum thyroxine in clinical hypothyroidism was tested using six normal and twenty radio-thyroidectomized Beagles. Clinical signs of hypothyroidism began to appear 3-4 months after the first treatment with ¹³¹I. At the conclusion of the experiment all dogs were considered clinically hypothyroid. The signs of hypothyroidism in the order of frequency were; (1) skin and hair coat changes, (2) increased weight gain, (3) intolerance to cold, (4) and arthralgia and/or myalgia. One-hundred sixty-seven control serum samples gave a mean T₄ thyroxine value of 2.08 ug./100 ml. (S.D. ± .46). Two-hundred seventy-three test samples had a mean serum T₄ thyroxine value of 0.95 ug./100 ml. (S.D. ± 0.32). The results of this experiment indicate the serum T₄ thyroxine test is valid as an aid in detecting clinical hypothyroidism in dogs. |
