Abstract:ABSTRACT: The determination of the left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) has classically been an invasive procedure. This paper compares a multigated scintigraphic technique with a two dimensional real time (2-D) echocardiographic technique for LVEF determination. Both are noninvasive techniques and were performed on 10 electrocardiogram normal heartworm free dogs. Technetium 99m labeled red blood cells (RBC's) were used and the scintigraphic data were acquired with the camera in 3 different positions. Regions of interest (ROI's) around the end systolic and end diastolic left ventricles were used to calculate the LVEF. The long axis parasternal view of the left ventricle (LV) was used to acquire the echocardiographic data and the modified Teichholz formula used to determine the LV end diastolic and end systolic volumes from which the LVEF was calculated. The scintigraphically determined LVEF (71 +- 12%) correlated well with the echocardiographically determined LVEF (58 +- 11%) (p=0.0290) and was also considered the easier and superior of the two.
