| Abstract: | ABSTRACT: Dimethyl sulfoxide (0.76 g/kg) or mannitol (2.0 g/kg) were administered as a single intravenous dose to 9 healthy adult dogs in a cross-over trial with each dog receiving each drug. Each trial with each drug was separated by 8 weeks. The study was performed to quantitate the effects of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) on renal function and to compare these effects to those produced following mannitol administration. Quantitative urinalysis were performed on each dog for the 24-hour period prior to drug administration and for the 24-hour period following the drug administration. The 24-hour period following drug administration was divided into 4 study periods (ie, 0-3 hrs, 3-6 hrs, 6-12 hrs and 12-24 hrs post-administration). Data assessed included urine production, osmolar clearance, free-water clearance, endogenous creatine clearance, urine solute excretion of sodium, potassium, urea and phosphate, and fractional solute clearance of sodium, potassium, urea and phosphate. |
