Robin Bledsoe, bookseller, description: Seven pictorial sections of a scroll on horsemanship in traditional Japan [Japan, mid to later Edo era, c. 1780-1820]. 7 loose sections, each about 31.1 x 41.2 cm. Each has an image of a horse and rider at various gaits, accompanied by calligraphed explanations of the horsemanship techniques pictured. “The combination of the very competently drawn and colored horses and their riders and the self-confident and quite powerfully written calligraphy is very pleasing to the eye. Unsigned, undated, but the paper and pigments suggest a late 18th or early 19th century date.”
