| Item Description: | Volume 5 by W. Ellenberger, H. Baum, H. Dittrich and Georg Münch. Volume 1 has title-page and text in German, French, and English. Library lacks volume 3 Library lacks Band 2. Michael Laird, bookseller, description: Scarce series of portfolios, each containing a suite of meticulous illustrations in which are depicted, and exhaustively described, various anatomical views of animals. That these renderings were created expressly for the use of artists is remarkable. Notably, the present collection contains the original prospectus which states that 5 portfolios were to be published. For more almost a year we have made attempts to assemble a complete set, without success; the present collection lacks Part II (Anatomie des Rindes) but is otherwise complete, containing a total of 52 folio plates, plus the accompanying texts. Band I: vi, 76 pp. text in German, French and English, bound in original printed wrappers. With 20 full-page plates of horses, loose as issued in original printed paper chemise (soiled). Band III: 28 pp. text in German, bound in original printed wrappers. With 16 full-page plates of lions, loose as issued in original green cloth portfolio. Band IV: 28 pp. text in German, bound in original printed wrappers. With 8 full-page plates of goats and deer, loose as issued in original green cloth portfolio. Band V: 20 pp. text in German, bound in original printed wrappers. With 8 full-page plates of dogs, loose as issued in original brown cloth portfolio. ADDED: 2 anatomical sketches a cow (one on tissue paper, the other on thick paper) in ink and pencil. |
