Description
Summary:Niall Kenny description: The book appears to lack two leaves but the frontispiece and engraved title seem to be part of the gatherings. The book is identical to all other copies examined, and to the companion volume, “The cow doctor”, so suspect it is as issued. The engraved title page has an imprint of “Derby, Thomas Richardson & Son” with the title “Every man his own Farrier”; the wording on the main title page is “The Pocket Farrier...”. The date of publication is uncertain but is often given as 1844 (although Huth gives it as 1830), however Thomas Richardson's earliest known publication from Paternoster Row was 1860. There is another imprint I have seen which was dated to 1844 on the engraved title page (still with the Derby imprint) but Richardson's address on the title page was 172 Fleet Street. It is known that Richardson was certainly at this address in 1846 so suspect the Fleet Street address is the 1st issue of this title. Also the 1st issues of both “The pocket farrier” and “The cow doctor” have Derby as the pre-eminent place of imprint on the printed title page, but the second issues give pre-eminence to London.
Item Description:Added engraved title page: "Every man his own farrier. Derby: Thomas Richardson & Son."
Undated, but earliest publication by Thomas Richardson and Son at Paternoster Row address was 1860; an earlier dated edition from 1847 gives address as Fleet Street.
