| Summary: | Michael Laird Rare Books description: Later French quarter basane over decorated paper boards, signed by Farairre, spine lettered direct, original wrappers bound in. Uncommon work on Horse Locomotion, the preferred second edition, revised and greatly augmented with thirty additional "chronophotographies" and five series of the "attitudes du cheval aux trois allures" not found in the 1896 edition. In this remarkable work, historical paintings and drawings of the movement of the horse are compared with original chronophotographs by Etienne-Jules Marey. These chronophotographs graphically deconstruct horse locomotion in terms of the gallop, trot, and canter. The five "Locomotion" series of the attitudes of the horse, here presented for the first time, appear on two double-page folding plates and include: Le Pas, Le Trot, Le Galop a Droit, Le Galop a Gauche, and Le Galop de Course a Droit. The author, Maxime Guerin-Catelain, was an authority on this subject, about which she wrote several volumes, including "Le saut des obstacles: recherches expérimentales," 1898 and "Le Changement de Pied au Galop - analyse de son mecanisme, recherches experimentales," 1902. Guerin-Catelain made 26 films with Etienne-Jules Marey, all on the horse in motion.
