| Item Description: | A reissue, with cancel title page, of The parfait mareschal, or compleat farrier, printed in Edinburgh the same year. Cf. CLU-C cat. Prefatory material possibly reset. V. 1: [36], 261, [17], [4], 86, [1] pages ; volume 2: [16], 300, [4] pages. "A supplement of horsemanship ... by Sir William Hope ... Printed at Edinburgh" has special title page. With frontispiece portrait (plate) of the author. With additional engraved title pages (plates) for parts 1 and 2. NLM copy imperfect: lacking frontis. port. Niall Kenny, seller, description: Scarce. The contents to first part, although being 3u-3z, are often bound before the text of the first part in this issue, hence the difference in collation from ESTC, but can also be bound at the end of Part I. The supplement to the first part retains the original Edinburgh imprint and clearly printed on quite different paper from first part. The 2nd issue is identical to the 1st issue (“The parfait mareschal, or compleat farrier…”), except the different binding position of the contents of 1st part, and a new title page portrait were added. The London edition used the plate for the 1st part of the Edinburgh printing for the title page of the 2nd part, altering the wording to “The Compleat Horseman Part the 2d”, and removing the Edinburgh imprint from the bottom, and altering the border lines). The same pagination errors are present in both issues: in Part I – the ‘2’ of Uu2 is upside down (p 171); in Supplement to part I – the ‘2’ of H2 is upside down; Part II – 202 as ‘200’; 223 as ‘213’; 279 as ‘278’.) Oddly the text of Part II has “Part I” at the start and “The end of the first part” at the end. This was present in both issues of the 1st edition, but was corrected for the 2nd edition of 1717. BL copy heavily mutilated and no use for collation. Trinity copy has the title page for the Edinburgh 1st issue bound in as a 2nd title page. |
