| Abstract: | ABSTRACT: A study was undertaken concerning parasites of the blackbuck antelope in Texas and experimental transmission of gastrointestinal helminths from blackbuck to cattle, sheep and goats. Three blackbuck were examined for external and internal parasites. The latter were listed by location, sex, maturity and numbers present. External parasite species found were as follows: Amblyomma americanum, larval Ixodidae and Tricholipeurus parellelus. Internal parasite species found were as follows: Cysticercus tenuicollis, Camelostrongylus mentulatus, Haemonchus contortus, Trichostrongylus axei, T. colubriformis, T. probolurus, Nematodirus spathiger, Oesophagostomum sp., and Trichuris globulosa. Five gastrointestinal nematodes, Camelostrongylus mentulatus, Haemonchus contortus, Trichostrongylus axei, T. colubriformis and T. probolurus, were experimentally transmitted to both sheep and goats from blackbuck feces. No gastrointestinal helminths were experimentally transmitted to cattle from blackbuck feces. However, since the cattle were exposed to very low numbers of infective larvae, no conclusions could be reached regarding this particular phase of the study. |
