| Item Description: | Title from instruction sheet. Rectangular leather-covered box with push-button clasp; contains 6 surgical instruments and folded 33 x 20.5 instruction sheet; manufacturer label on bottom. Seller, Niall Kenny, description: Small box of veterinary operating instruments made in Glasgow in about 1860, specifically to perform operations on sheep for the treatment of ‘Sturdy’ or ‘Gid’. This is the rather odd disease where the intermediate life-stage of a particular tapeworm develops large fluid filled cysts inside the sheep's brain. This still occurs occasionally in the UK and the success rate for surgery is surprisingly high. This is why the removal of these cysts has been practiced for hundreds of years, however this is the first specific surgical kit I have ever come across for the procedure. The instruments are slightly rusted but generally in good condition and, uniquely, the kit still has its original operating instructions. |
