| Summary: | Jonathan A. Hill, bookseller, description: Enlarged edition (1st ed.: 1770-72). Hunter (1729?-1809), physician, was founder of the York Lunatic Asylum in 1777. He is best known, however, for his illustrated editions with notes of John Evelyn's "Sylva" (1776) and "Terra" (1778). He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of London in 1775, and of that of Edinburgh in 1792. The present work was the outgrowth of his founding membership in the York Agriculture Society. In the Preface of the present work, Hunter states "it is my intentino to draw into one focus, all that is widely diffused through numberless volumes of agricultural information; and in so doing, I expect to be able to exhibit to the favourers of Agriculture, a field well cultivated -- and free from all unsightly and noxious weeds. In this proposed collection there will be some papers that have never appeared in public, but by far the greatest number have been published in different periodical works." Apart from the wear to the upper cover of Vol. VI, a very fine and pretty set. Armorial bookplate. Fussell, II, pages 92-93: "these essays are a precise guide to the progress plant physiology had so far made." |
