| Summary: | Jonathan A. Hill, Bookseller description: First edition of the earliest bibliography of equitation and the care of horses, the third earliest bibliography of veterinary science, and the earliest bibliography of Spanish agriculture. This copy is most desirable, having belonged to Jean-Baptiste Huzard (1755-1838), the famous veterinarian, agronomist, and voracious book collector; our copy contains his significant and substantial manuscript additions. ... Rodríguez (1756-1819) spent most of his life at the Royal Stables of Spain, first as assistant farrier and eventually rising to the rank of master farrier and veterinarian. At the expense of the king, he was able to study at the veterinary school at Alfort, where Huzard completed his earliest studies (and it seems likely they knew each other). Towards the end of his career, Rodríguez served as the director of Madrid's veterinary school. He was known for his scholarship, as demonstrated in the present bibliography. The present copy has been interleaved with blank leaves on which Huzard translates into French the title-page and preface, and critically edits the text. He adds a number of early Spanish publications omitted by or unknown to Rodríguez on the blank leaves and comments on several further entries. In his preface, Rodríguez mentions Huzard several times, lauding him as a "skilled veterinarian" and thanking him for his help with the writing of this bibliography. A member of the Académie des Sciences, Huzard was a prominent government administrator who greatly influenced veterinary and agronomic practices in France. He was instrumental in the introduction of Spanish merinos to France and in the establishment of several veterinary schools. His enormous library of over 40,000 rare books was sold at auction in 1842 and this copy appears as lot 2547 in the third volume. A fine and important copy with a distinguished provenance. With the stamp of Huzard on recto of title. Later bookplates of two of Spain's greates collectors: Vicente Salva y Perez and Ricardo Heredia, Count of Benahavis. "Catálogo de la Biblioteca de Salvá" (Valencia: Ferrer de Orga, 1872) description: "Bajo el punto de vista bibliografico esta obra vale mui poco; pobre de noticias e inexacta en las descripciones, no tiene otro merito sino haber sido la primera de su genero publicada en espana, y llevar unos cortos juicios criticos sobre las obras mencionadas en ella. -- Mi ejemplar va intercalado de hojas blancas que contienen algunas adiciones autografas de Mr. Huzard." [From a bibliographical point of view, this work is worth very little; poor listings and inaccurate descriptions, has no other merit but having been the first of its kind published in Spain, and take a short critical judgments about the works mentioned in it. - My copy is interspersed with white sheets containing some autograph additions by Mr. Huzard.]. |
