| Summary: | Michael Laird, bookseller, description: Broadsheet (35 x 13 cm) printed on both sides. Short tear on center fold strengthened with adhesive tape on verso. with woodcut portraits of the magician and of Dom Pedro, "the Pig with a Human Brain," a brief list of illusions to be performed, admission prices, and showtime on obverse and a teaser for an "Egyptian Vivivsection" illusion on reverse. Very good antiquarian condition. A striking and rare broadside which describes an extraordinary performance of "Dom Pedro," described as a "Pig with a Human Brain that reads, multiplies, subtracts, and divides, plays a game of cards, rings a bell, fires a gun, tells you what you are thinking of, and many other things that must be seen to be believed." Zell Dreitzehn (1830-1882?), or "De La Mano," was a successful Austrian magician who traveled to New York in the 1870s due to the area's growing interest in Spiritualism. He supposedly vanished while investigating hauntings at a home in Westerlo, NY in 1882. The performance also included: Mahomet's cane, Ah Sin's laundry, the enchanted candle, Prof. De La Mano; Dom Pedro, the pig with a human brain; the Chinese Paradox, and the "Egyptican Vivisection" in which the Professor cuts a living man to pieces." The printer was A.S. Seer's Engraving and Printing House, 26 Union Square, N.Y., which was active at this address between 1870 and 1880 according to Evans no. 22837. |
