Description
Abstract:ABSTRACT: Neither preservation nor cultivation techniques utilized in this study provided a means for maintenance of Ichthyophthirius multifilis outside its host. Cryopreservation studies utilizing one to ten percent dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) showed greatest promise for maintaining I. multifilis cysts. Antibiotics at concentrations routinely used in cell culture studies killed all stages of I. multifilis used in this study. Tissue tropisms of I. multifilis tomites were observed in preparations containing lyophilized fish tissues. However, neither the fish tissue preparations nor other artificial media examined supported growth or maintenance of the parasite.
