| Abstract: | ABSTRACT: An oxygen pressure of 29.4 pounds per square inch gauge pressure (psig) (3 atmospheres absolute - ata) caused a 10-40% mortality in healthy mice when they were exposed for 90 min twice daily for 7 days. The mice which died during this procedure exhibited no postmortem lesion which could be considered the cause of death. The foregoing exposure regimen was used to treat 7-10-week-old, male, A/J mice which had been inoculated intraperitoneally with 10⁶ Plasmodium berghei infected erythrocytes. Infected mice were treated for 7 days or until the entire group of 10 mice was dead, whichever was first. By the sixth day of exposure the group which began treatment immediately following inoculation had developed significantly lower parasite densities than the untreated infected controls. Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) beginning on day 5 post-inoculation had no significant effect on parasite concentrations. Air instead of oxygen, at 29.4 psig was also ineffective. There was no significant difference between the survival times in any group. The red blood cell (RBC) counts in treated, uninfected mice were not significantly altered by either HBO or compressed air. On the seventh day of infection the RBC counts in the infected group exposed to HBO beginning immediately post-inoculation were significantly higher than the untreated, infected controls. Reticulocyte counts did not vary enough to affect the outcome of the infections. All animals developed patent parasitemias following inoculation with P. berghei infected erythrocytes. Thirteen (7%) recovered spontaneously. |
