| Summary: | Niall Kenny description: Excellent copy, bound with 3 other pamphlets in contemporary quarter calf; bookplate of Douglas Peter Crossman, and Richard Prime; from Christie's auction 5310 1/9/08; it seems the normal title page (leaf A1) has been replaced by an engraved title page with an oval vignette of a horse in a stable; typo p63 as '39', and no number on p66; seems very similar to ESTC T209580 (the Comben copy, i.e. D 124) but the imprint is slightly different. There is another unrecorded copy of ESTC T209580 in Edinburgh, erroneously catalogued as 1735. The collation and text are clearly identical to my copy; the engraved title is also the same but the publisher is given as: “London: Printed for Edwd. Johnston, & sold by Wallis & Stonehouse No. 16 Ludgate Street”.; clearly my copy is a variant on ESTC T209580. There is yet another unrecorded version (see below) where the typographical errors mentioned above have been corrected, and the publisher is yet another variation on the above. The Science Museum seems to have two copies, the preceding Comben copy, with an additional one being part of the Cheveley collection at Wye; Date of publication certainly after 1774 when W. Johnston at Ludgate was replace by Edward Johnston; RVCS has another Edward Johnston printing but of 78pp (suspect poor collation). |
