| Summary: | Niall Kenny description: Very good copy, slightly browned, in original tree calf; 1st edition of the collected works in Dingley (547); although this is marked as 3rd edition it is in fact the 2nd edition of the collected works, although some elements of it were on their 3rd edition (i.e. 'Lectures' and 'Essay on Eclipse'; both of these state this on the section title pages). The nine plates mentioned on the title page include the portrait frontispiece. This printing was never issued with plaster moulds of horses feet and brass shoes, instead it has 2 extra plates in 'Lectures'; all typographical errors as in Mellon 74: i.e. page 6 and 7 of 'Posthumous works' incorrectly given as 4 and 5, and p182 of 'Lectures given as 180 (plus a few incorrect signature markings). Interestingly the Mellon 74 and Edinburgh copies have a blank leaf between end of 'Lectures' and start of 'Posthumous' (not present in this copy), and they lack the dedication pages at start of the book and in 'Lectures'; suspect that this is a different issue as the end papers in Mellon 74 are watermarked 1798, while they are 1795 in my copy; the text is all watermarked 1794 (including title page of 'Lectures'); Also of note is that the general title and section titles are all on laid paper, while the text is all wove; these are probably cancel titles, as the text seems identical in all editions; the title page of 1st edition of 'Lectures' is also wove paper (that is why that page has been designated x1 above as it must be a cancel title). The frontispiece plate for "Lectures" also differs from its first edition in that the building in the background is altered in form with the words "Veterinary College" removed (oddly, unlikely as it seems, the two forms of plate seem to come off the same printing block as a number of unique marks from the first plate are to be found on the 2nd state, and the shadow of the first form of the building seems to be visible on the second form of the plate). The essay on Eclipse first appeared in 1791 in a dual French/English edition (see Dingley 545). The frontispiece portrait and frontispiece for the 'Lectures' has an earlier imprint than the main title page, being "London: Printed for Martin & Bain, Fleet Street, May 1, 1795." Dedication signed "Peckham, December 10, 1974." |
