Description
Summary:Niall Kenny description: This edition is supposed to have 4 plates (bound at frontispiece, p4-5, p26-27, p30-31 and p42-43; the plates all have the page number printed in the top right corner), so the collation above is for a 'correct' 1st edition, as the teeth plate on p4 and its explanatory leaf are generally thought to have been added for the 3rd edition. However one copy of the 1st edition examined (in completely original binding) had the teeth plate and explanatory leaf, so possibly some very late issues of the 1st edition may contain these. This book was obviously popular as its plates turn up in other books, i.e. the plate of the skeleton of the horse (on p 26) was copied as the frontispiece of the 2nd edition of John Wood's "A new compendious treatise on farriery ..." of 1762, and the frontispiece plate was used as the frontispiece in William Foster's "The gentleman's experienced farrier ..." of 1786. Signature error: Y4 given as Q4. As with all other copies the Edinburgh and RVC copies do not include the teeth plate and the explanatory leaf.
