Description
Summary:Niall Kenny description: The first volume is believed to have been written by John Percivall, William Percivall's father, but contemporary reviews of the book clearly considered that William Percivall wrote it (see testimonials at end of Vol. II). No half-title called for in volume 1, that in Vol II and III simply states "Part II" and "Part III" respectively. There is also no volume designation in Vol. I as it is possible that follow-up volumes were not initially planned for. William Percivall is given as the author of Vols. II and III. The first advert leaf in Vol. I advertises a book in press called "Observations on the constitution, economy, and defects of the veterinary department of Great Britain: accompanied with plans of amendment ...". It seems this was never published as I can trace no copies. The remaining adverts are publisher's adverts, and are often not found with the book (e.g. Dingley and Edinburgh copies). Vol. I typographical error: 172 as '127', but this is not present in all copies examined, therefore must be more than one issue of this edition. Edinburgh copy has this error, and has the first advert leaf. NLS copy has the error but no advert leaves. Preface Vol. I signed: "Royal Horse Infirmary, Woolwich, May, 1823." Printer's imprint Vol. I: "London: Printed by John Hill, Water Lane, Blackfriars." Printer's imprint Vol. II + III: "J. Hill, Printer, 57, Paternoster Row."
