| Summary: | This is assumed to be the first edition (and is certainly the earliest dated edition). This edition, and its re-issues in 1762, 1764 and 1765, have no frontispiece; as all subsequent undated editions do it is therefore reasonable to assume that these are all after 1764/5 irrespective of page number. The title was changed to "Complete.." by the 1764 issue, and Cooke's address was "Shakespear's Head" from the 1762 issue on (BBTI also indicates J Cooke only published out of Paternoster Row from 1762 onwards). The claims in the catalogue of David Beazley's Library sale (Bloomsbury in 2003) of the 240pp undated edition being the 1st edition simply on the basis of page number seems illogical, as there is clearly a gradual progression in the form of the book from 1758 on, with the undated editions being late. This 1758 edition is scarce. Schwerdt says that leaf L6 is blank |
