Tipped-in hand-written note: "This is volume 1 of the first edition. The work is dedicated to Henry Dundas, Viscount Melville (see D.N.B.) and apparently this vol. 1 was his - possibly presentd by the author. On the half-title is written "Dunira." Viscount Melville was also Baron (or more correctly Lord) Dunira. In 1806, the year of publication and dedication, Viscount Melville was impeached (the last person to be so arraigned) and acquitted, though found guilty of negligence. It is probably that James Clark meant this dedication to be a gesture of friendship and political sympathy at a critical time."
