Description
Summary:Niall Kenny description: Printed by J. Clarke?. A1r title, A1v blank, A2r-A3v dedication, A4r-v preface, [11]-38 text, D2r-v 'Dr. Mead's Powder and Method...' The copy of this title, which was examined, was bound with an undated edition of Burdon's 'Gentleman's pocket-farrier' printed by E. Owen, and included the notes which appeared as footnotes in later editions of that same book. These footnotes also first appeared in London editions in 1735 and, as such, I suspect 'The additions and remarks to the pocket-farrier' must be exceptionally rare in any form as they were likely only available for a very limited time in 1735. The ESTC entry on E. Owen's printing of Burdon's book makes no mention of these notes and it seems clear that not all copies were accompanied by them. The structure of 'The additions and remarks', with its own separate title page, dedication and preface, also emphasises it was a separate publication. Exceptionally rare, and possibly unique, as the only other mention of these separate notes is in Dingley 118, where they are stated to be the '3rd edition' and also dated 1735. These notes by Bracken first appeared, not in the London editions, but the Dublin edition of Burdon of 1733; it is unclear why the notes were initially published separately in London editions. However Bracken saw fit to add in a few remedies of his own, not in the original work, just before the index. The printer for this 1735 edition has been presumed from the Dingley copy; suspect that this may be the 1st edition of these separate notes, as it lacks an edition statement; the first gathering here seems to lack a leaf but collates exactly with the Dingley copy (now in the Science Museum).
