Description
Summary:ABSTRACT: The ovaries, oviducts, uteri and cervices of 90 repeat-breeder beef cows from the Eastern region of the Dominican Republic were collected to determine their estrous condition, abnormalities, cystic ovaries and the ratio between calcium and phosphorus in relation to low calf crop levels. The estrous classification was determined upon a gross and histological examination of the ovaries. The reproductive tract was examined grossly for abnormalities and histologically for the response of the surface epithelium to the ovarian status. Seventy-eight percent of the cows were determined to have been cycling normally and 22 percent were in a state of inactivity. Seventy-three percent of the reproductive tract epithelium responded to the mandate of the ovaries and 27 percent were in disagreement. Fourteen heifers were found to have immature uterine horns and 12 had the ovaries in a prepubertal state. The incidence of abnormal uteri and cervices was found to be seven and four percent respectively, and only six percent of the ovaries were found to be cystic. The mineral data were inconclusive, but a positive trend was observed in the heifers that were exposed to mineral supplementation.
