Description
Summary:Niall Kenny description: There are clearly variant printings of this 1st edition. I can trace at least three. The above collation is appropriate for the 1st issue of this book; with issues 2 & 3 having an additional leaf of extra subscribers. Hence issues 2 & 3 would collate: [4], iii, [1], 184, [14] p., [1] leaf of plates. In addition the other differences are: 1) Issues 1 & 2 have a pasted label "The following remarkable nostrum" stuck on the bottom of page Bb2v, however in the 3rd issue this text is printed on the page rather than just pasted on. In addition the decorative line under the title of the pasted label is also different in issue 1 from that in issue 2 (being a solid black bar in issue 2). 2) As stated above, issues 2 & 3 also have an additional page of subscribers, entitled "Subscribers Names Continued", however it is clear issue 3 has a few more names on this additional leaf than issue 2, and that slight alterations have been made to the first page of the list of subscribers for the 3rd issue (e.g. catch word has changed at the bottom). The Dingley, NLS, Bodleian and Edinburgh copies all seem to be first issue, in only having 8 pages in the subscribers list. This book is also noted for having 'edition binding', i.e. all original bindings are supposed to be identical, however the copies I have examined which are in original binding (and clearly from the same binder), show clear differences between the bindings of each issue. The Edinburgh copy seems unusual in not having the ornate gilt cornucopia decoration found on the spine of the other original bindings. It is, however, also in original binding but spine is plain with only gold highlights to the raised bands, however the label is identical on that on my copies, implying possibly the same binder.
