| Summary: | Niall Kenny description: Several copies examined, one of which was identical to Poynter 19.1. However another had the same pagination errors as Poynter 19.1 EXCEPT had extra (book 2: '186' for 189; book 4: '40' for 43) All examined copies lacked the folding woodcut but this seems to be only present in a few copies, and having a slightly different date from main text (albeit July instead of March 1607) I suspect it was not present in early issues of the book. The plate is also not present in Mellon 18. A variant copy also dated to 1607 is known (HL*) with a cancel title page; apart from the title page it is identical to the BL copy, although both have one of the additional pagination errors from this copy not mentioned in Poynter, i.e. '98' for 99 in book 1. Neither book has the folding plate. In addition a 1609 edition has been recorded (in Maggs catalogue from 1950) but that copy has been lost. A '2nd' ('3rd?') edition was issued 1617. Overall clearly must be several issues of this title and it is not clear currently which issue is most likely to need the folding plate. The designation of the first gathering in this copy is slightly odd, using symbols (́manicule C) rather than letters. |
