It seems that the true 1st edition title page made no mention of the dog section, but when this was eventually included in 1817/18 a new title page was issued (undated) including the dog section and one additional publisher (Simpkin and Marshall, Stationers'-Court; see Mellon 103). Some later issues also included an extra engraved title page. The true 1st issue title page seem scarce, with no copy in BL. There is a 2nd issue in RVC. Imprint of NLS copy different from this one, being: "London: Printed by W. Lewis, St. John's Square: for W. Lewis and Co. 9, Old Fish-Street, Doctors' Common; and sold by Sherwood and Co. Paternoster-Row; and by all booksellers in the United Kingdom, 1816" although the date of the dedication of May 1, 1816 is the same as here; NLS plates have early watermarks of 1812, 1813 and 1815 where they can be read; also title page does not mention dog section. It is difficult to be sure which is the true first edition but the Lewis printing is presumed to be, however a Thomas Kelly copy is recorded on COPAC (from National Trust) which has plates dated 1817-1823 but has a dedication dated Jan 1 1816. Despite this the date on the plates clearly shows that this Kelly edition is a later printing. |
